Run for fun at St Michael’s Primary School Ashburton
St Michael’s Primary School in Ashburton started the year with the Sporting Schools’ Athletics program. Run over 14 sessions, the students had a fantastic time. So much so – they wanted more in Term 2!
A great show of support for the IAAF Kids’ Athletics Program, Athletics Australia was thrilled to go back and teach more students the fun of Athletics.
The Term 2 program was made even more exciting for the students with Australian Athlete Linden Hall attending a session at St Michael’s. In celebration of Athletics Week from 8-12 May, Athletics Australia thought it would be a great opportunity to reward the school for their support of Athletics.
Athletics Australia Coordinator Tait Forster said Linden was fantastic with the students.
“Linden showed the students a video of a race she had just won in Victoria, which provided great insight into her preparation for competitions,” Tait said.
“It was also nice to reflect on the excitement of competing at the recent Rio Olympics,” he said.
Linden joined the kids for their Athletics Session run by Coach Nick Bowden.
“All in all, it was a great day and a great way to celebrate the sport of Athletics. Students then posed for photos with Linden and were provided with giveaways thanks to Oceania Athletics and Athletics Australia,” Tait said.
Teachers from St Michael’s thought the event was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to be exposed to an Olympic athlete.
It was a great addition to an already successful program – with teachers seeing students who do not usually get involved, active and enjoying themselves. Students have also shown interested in joining a running club since being a part of the program.
