Northside Christian College students hookin’ into 2017
Over 100 students in Years 3 to 6 at Northside Christian College in Bundoora, Victoria spent the first term of 2017 learning how to ‘Hookin2Hockey’…
Delivered by Hockey Australia through the Sporting Schools program, Hookin2Hockey is designed to give young girls and boys the opportunity to learn the basic skills of hockey.
For many of the young students at Northside Christian College, this experience was a first. Hookin2Hockey gave them the opportunity to get a taste of the sport in an environment that was safe, fun and inclusive.
Northside Christian College’s Sporting Schools coordinator, Anna Venegas said that the kids absolutely loved the program.
“Considering not many kids had played hockey before, we were really impressed with how well the program went,” Anna said.
“We now have older students asking for hockey to be included in their sports curriculum too – something that was inspired by seeing the younger kids having so much fun.”
The program was run by a local Hockey Australia coach to four different classes, with each student participating in five sessions.
As a result, a number of students involved with the program have decided to take up hockey outside of school at their local club; the familiar face making it all the more welcoming!
The school was also able to purchase a Hookin2Hockey Schools Pack which included 30 plastic hockey sticks and 30 lightweight balls – a great way to ensure that playing hockey becomes a regular activity at the school.
Sporting Schools is a $160 million Australian Government initiative to get more children playing more sport, before, during and after school. Want to run a Hockey Australia program at your school? Check out all the details on the Hockey Australia page.
