New Sporting Schools program targeting secondary students
Following the success of the primary school program, Sporting Schools will roll out a targeted program for secondary school students in Years 7 and 8 from July. The program focuses on addressing the barriers that prevent teenagers from participating in sport and aims to provide greater access to tailored resources and support where it is needed most.
Sporting Schools program for secondary schools will roll out in Term 3 with select sports to a small number of schools. Secondary schools will be invited to apply for funding to deliver sport programs before, during, and after school hours using one of our national sporting organisation (NSO) partners. The targeted approach in secondary schools will continue in Term 4 with a larger number of schools and sports, and is expected to continue until the end of 2018.
In order to help sports develop their approach for secondary schools, the ASC undertook the Youth Participation Project in 2016 to look at the most successful strategies for engaging the youth sector through sport. The project collaborated with a range of national sporting organisations (NSOs) to deliver pilot programs (across five terms) in more than 80 schools around Australia.
Further information on the Sporting Schools program for secondary schools will be coming soon.
