Gympie West year 2 and 3 students have recently enjoyed learning to play AFL over the past four weeks thanks to Sporting Schools

Dayne Frew from AFL Queensland and PE teacher Anthony Schofield have completed the programme teaching children basic AFL skills and games during their lessons.

Students were also each given their very own AFL ball and work booklet for completing the programme.

Deputy Principal Wayne Bahr and PE teacher Anthony Schofield applied for a grant through “Sporting Schools” to cover the cost.

Sporting schools enabled children at Gympie West to complete the programme at no cost to parents.

Without this financial support many children would have missed this opportunity.

The programme was a huge success and students are looking forward to more opportunities like this.

Sporting Schools is a $100 million Australian Government initiative to get more children playing more sport, before, during and after school. Want to run an AFL programme at your school? Check out all the details on the AFL page.
